Lantern Festival 2026 | What is the origin of the Lantern Festival?
The Lantern Festival originated in China and is also known as the "Shangyuan Festival," "Lantern Festival," or "Little New Year."

There are several legends about its origin. One legend says that in ancient times, many ferocious birds and beasts harmed people. People organized to fight them. A divine bird, having lost its way, landed on earth but was shot dead by hunters. The Jade Emperor was furious and wanted to burn the human world on the 15th day of the first lunar month. The Jade Emperor's daughter couldn't bear to tell the mortals, so people decorated with lanterns, set off firecrackers, and lit fireworks in response. From then on, every year on the 15th day of the first lunar month, people hang lanterns and set off firecrackers to commemorate this.

Another legend says that it was established during the reign of Emperor Wen of Han to commemorate the "suppression of the Lü Clan." The elimination of the Lü Clan happened to fall on the 15th day of the first lunar month. Emperor Wen of Han went out of the palace incognito, and every household decorated with lanterns to celebrate, gradually forming the "Lantern Festival."

Thirdly, it originated from the Torch Festival. Legend has it that people in the countryside of southwestern China would make torches from reeds or branches on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, and dance in groups with torches in hand to drive away insects and beasts, ward off evil, and pray for a good harvest. The Torch Festival was extremely popular during the Sui, Tang, and Song dynasties.

Lantern Festival Custom 2: Lantern Viewing
As mentioned when discussing the origins of the Lantern Festival, the ancients originally hung lanterns on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month to deceive the Jade Emperor and "save their lives." After successfully surviving the crisis, it evolved into a custom commemorating peace and prosperity.

In modern times, lantern designs and styles have become increasingly novel and colorful. In recent years, different regions in Taiwan have even taken turns hosting themed lantern festivals, making it a grand event for the whole family to enjoy together and celebrate the Spring Festival.
